The Great Indie Bake Off 2008
Hey Hey! this is an open invitation to join the Great Indie Bake Off.
The rules are simple, bake something inspired by a game or app, and post a picture somewhere.
Then just let me know, either by a comment (or trackback) here, an email to gavin at antair.com, or via Twitter, and I’ll post the picture and link here. For inspiration, check out the various awesome game cakes posted by Kotaku or in this top game cake list (but don’t be scared away, if I can do it, so can you). We’re an equal opportunities extravaganza, so Bento (see The Bento Factory) is also totally acceptable.
The contest closing date was 18th January. Thanks to everyone who entered the 16 cakes.
Voting was held at 148apps: Great Indie Bake Off Voting.
The winning cake has now been announced here: Great Indie Bake Off Result.
The lucky voter who got the prizes was Sean Waters. Congratulations Sean!
The prize list was getting long, so I’ve bumped it to below the cakes.
Most of the entries were developed by the developers of the apps themselves, but the contest was open to everyone.
Current Indie Cakes
iTunes: ScribBall
iTunes: Zen Bound (Coming Soon from Secret Exit)
iTunes: Flick Bowling
iTunes: Chirp!
In honor of iFart, baked(?) by evil genius JustinFic of Freeverse.
iTunes: Slingshot
iTunes: Up There
iTunes: Scramboni
iTunes: BurnBall
iTunes: Chopper
iTunes: Sneezies
iTunes: Yummy
Appy Entertainment asked for their cake to be listed separately since they outsourced it, that’s the only reason it hasn’t been placed in the order received. Nice work by the bakers, and big thanks to Appy for supporting the Bake Off.
iTunes: Up There

Yes it’s Pacman, but an indie game developer made them, they stay. Go KarjaSoft!
The Prizes
We started the ball rolling with a free copy of Sneezies, and Chillingo have put up an AirCurve Stand for the winner. Now we have more donated iPhone Games/Apps:-
Veiled Games, whose cookies provided the spark to set this thing in motion, have added a copy of PayDay Roulette and a copy of Up There to the pot.
Polar Bear Farm have kindly offered copies of their apps, Nice List, Record, Notepad, and Telegram.
Tim Haines has donated a copy of BurnBall.
A copy of Tiltafun, when released, courtesy of On The Rocks Productions.
Peter from ByteClub (Scramboni) has donated a $15 iTunes gift card. This prize is only available in the US.
AppBeacon have donated an additional $25 iTunes gift card. This prize is only available in the US.
Unfortunately, unless Apple changes the rules between now and the end of the contest, the iPhone game/app prizes can only be redeemed in the US. I’ll try to make sure the winner at least gets a copy of Sneezies though, and just in case you don’t have an iPhone, I’ll add in a copy of our PC/Mac game, DoubleTake.
There may be more prizes to come, but the real reward is cake, and everyone who enters gets to enjoy their own.
Rules?
I don’t see any reason to exclude anyone who isn’t currently an indie developer, or to insist that you base the cake on your own game/app. So if you want to enter a cake that is based on a game or app made by someone else, feel free.
And remember, entry is it’s own wonderfully tasty reward, everyone needs cake.
Want to help?
Even if you don’t want to enter, any help spreading the word about the contest will be much appreciated. We made a couple of banners, feel free to use them any way you can to help spread the word about the Bake Off.
You can also use the ShareThis button below, or post a link to this page on your blog, or even just tweet about the cakes if you like them. Every little helps.

[...] The Great Indie Bake Off is a cooking challenge put out to the titans of the independent iPhone App scene to make the best cake they could based on their products. Developers from around the world responded to the call, took off their XXXXL t-shirts, and put on their somehow even larger aprons. Fire alarms were set off, calories were gained, and only the moistest survived to show up in the competition. The voting for the contest is being hosted by popular iPhone App review site 148apps.com, and we’re inviting everyone to help us choose the best cake. [...]
